July 9, 1990 DECworld Networking Product Announcements
DEC makes its major product announcements at a gathering of customers
and press called DECworld. These are held 2-4 times per year, and
everyone was waiting for the July 9th meeting where DEC was supposed to
roll out the first of its DECnet Phase V products. About mid-June we
started hearing rumors about delays and, sure enough, DEC has postponed
its Phase V introduction to September, 1990 (European DECworld). The
Wall Steet Journal did not mention DECworld announcements and the DEC
trade press seems to be talking about the VAX 4000, and expressing
disappointment in the further delays of Phase V.
There were some interesting networking products introduced, even
without Phase V. DEC introduced two FDDI link products, the DECbridge
500 and the DECconcentrator 500. The DECbridge 500 provides an
interconnection between IEEE 802.3/Ethernet and FDDI networks. It
exhibits the self-learning capability which characterizes DEC bridges,
and is protocol independent (since it is a level 2 device). List price
is $25,000. It is not clear whether DEC OEM's this product or if they
make it themselves.
The DECconcentrator 500 is a device that is used to directly attach
FDDI stations (systems, workstations and/or bridges) to the FDDI
backbone. It has multiple ports for Single Attachment Station (SAS)
attachment to the FDDI ring and dedicated ports for the
interconnections of concentrators to form the backbone. Concentrators
can also be connected in a tree configuration where the expansion port
of the lower level concentrator in the tree is connected to a station
port of the upper level concentrator. This cascading of concentrators
can be useful in setting up hierarchical FDDI networks. There was no
mention of the number of ports of configuration options, but the price
of a fully configured DECconcentrator to be used in a backbone is
$15,000.
Version 2.0 of the VMS based DECmcc network management station was
introduced. This is a transition product which consolidates DEC's
current network management products into a single software package.
This is the first step toward moving their network management
applications to full EMA-compliance. The interesting thing about this
product is that it supports SNMP. There are two versions availabe, the
single management station (SMS $26,505) and the extended management
station (EMS $44,175) which allows network management from remote
nodes. One rumor we have heard is that SNMP support will be removed
when this extended management capability becomes available on Ultrix,
and Phase V network management products start shipping. Phase V
network management is based on CMIP. Full ULTRIX based DECmcc is
expected in 12 months.
A version of the DECmcc for ULTRIX was introduced, which enables
network managers to remotely manage network devices on an ULTRIX
system. It will manage devices either on a TCP/IP network or on a
DECnet Phase IV network. The price is $14,136.
One important ommission, in addition to the lack of Phase V products,
is the lack of any Token Ring announcements. The rumors are that there
are difficulties with the TI chip set.
So now we must wait until the September DECworld to find out details
about Phase V products. You can expect a summary/analysis of
networking product announcements made at that meeting.
